The “Palio di Siena” is a “replica” of a medieval horse race which runs twice every summer in the city
of Siena located in the beautiful region of Tuscany, Italy. The race takes its name "Palio" from the
Italian word which means "banner". This richly decorated banner, or Palio, is the prize given to the
winning “Contrada” (District) of the race. Of the 17 Contrada districts surrounding Siena, only 10 are
chosen by draw to compete in each race located in the center Campo di Siena.
